JBS Vol 25. Num 2. 2023. Article 3 - Current Practices in Assessing Child Language Disorders in Bangladesh - Review and Implications

Asifa Sultana
Abstract

Language-specific assessment tools are a prerequisite to the valid identification of language disorders in any language. Linguistically-accurate tests appear to be limited in number in Bangladesh. In order to understand the current scenario with regard to language assessment, a review was conducted based on the research available on the internet. The article is an overview of the existing assessment tools used in Bangladesh to assess Bangla-speaking children with language disorders. In order to conduct the review, we identified 20 relevant academic articles and then analyzed the language components used in the tests in Bangladesh using the guidelines in the latest scholarship on the subject. Our review confirmed that the tools currently used in the tests in Bangladesh are inadequate and lack linguistic authenticity. The review is important for informing both practitioners and policymakers of the need for language-specific assessments.
