Abstract

An emerging body of literature has demonstrated that in various Asian cities, young people, who are educated and middle-class are reconstructing the norms of intimacy in the face of the globalization of media and rapid urbanization. Drawing on findings from an ethnographic study conducted among 72 middle-class 15–19-yearolds living in Dhaka, Bangladesh, this article asks: how are middle-class young people in Dhaka (re)constructing the norms of premarital relationships? This article provides important insights about the emerging social norms and spaces urban middle-class young people are co-constructing in Bangladesh and highlights the importance of reconceptualizing young people’s roles in constructing norms.
